What If Symptoms Have Meaning? Bridging Psychoanalysis and Homoeopathy
Research Article
Abstract
Two different systems of thought, psychoanalysis and homoeopathy have a common interest in the inner life of the patient. Psychoanalysis aims to identify unconscious conflicts, emotional pattern and symbolic meaning behind the symptoms whereas homoeopathy focuses on totality of symptoms, primarily mental and emotional manifestations, during the choice of the simillium. Both traditions attach importance to the type of listening, individualization and therapeutic relationship. The paper discusses the conceptual bridges in psychoanalysis and homoeopathy, with emphasis on the common interest in subjectivity, dreams, emotional misery, and the sense of illness. It also reflects on how the psychoanalytic knowledge can be improved to the homoeopathic case-taking and vice versa. It is a reflective and scholarly exploration and not an assertion of equality between the two fields.
